Pineapple is an exotic fruit that contains vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, PP, fiber, and beneficial minerals. It can be not only eaten but also used as a hookah bowl, giving the tobacco smoke an exotic and original flavor. Due to its large size and special composition, making a bowl out of a pineapple is quite challenging, and today we will share some specifics of this process with you.

Choosing a Pineapple for Hookah

First of all, we will need a small pineapple weighing up to one kilogram. It should not be green, with a firm peel, but also not overripe, otherwise it will quickly lose its shape or release too much juice under the influence of hot tobacco smoke. You can cut the pineapple for the bowl either crosswise or lengthwise – a crosswise cut can yield two identical bowls for two hookahs, while a lengthwise cut allows you to fill it with a larger amount of tobacco mix, creating a blend of different tobacco flavors.

Preparing the Pineapple Bowl for Tobacco

Preparing the bowl for the tobacco mixture from half a pineapple takes place in several stages. We will explain how to do it with the bottom half of a cross-section of a ripe fruit:

  • Using a special knife or a spoon, scoop out the core to a depth of two or three centimeters, leaving a little pulp on the sides;

  • Turn the half over, and use a sharp and narrow knife to make a through-hole in the bottom for the stem (shaft). The end of the stem should fit into the pineapple as tightly as possible for perfect airtightness, so it is better to make the hole in a few attempts, gradually widening it;

  • The internal surface of the pineapple must be thoroughly blotted of juice using napkins or paper towels and left to dry for some time;

  • At the bottom of the hole you made, install an improvised grate for the tobacco mix using toothpicks – this protects the stem and the liquid in the vase (base) from falling tobacco particles;

  • The tobacco is placed in the scooped-out core of the pineapple on the toothpick grate, but it is not heavily pressed – hot air must pass through it freely;

  • Foil is placed over the pineapple. If you are using regular food foil, you must fold it in half or in three layers. The foil should be stretched over the top surface of the fruit and tightly wrap the edges by at least three or four centimeters around the perimeter;

  • In the places where the glowing coals will be placed on the foil, you must make holes for the hot air with a needle, awl, or toothpick;

  • The pineapple prepared in this way should be left for 6-8 minutes, and then placed on top of the hookah. Remember that the larger the top surface of the fruit, the more coal cubes you will need for a quality draw.

Main Features of a Pineapple Hookah

The main thing to remember when preparing a hookah with a pineapple is the correct choice of fruit and tobacco mix. The pineapple peel should be firm – press hard on it with your thumb, and if no dent remains, it is suitable for smoking. The tobacco mix for such a hookah must have the maximum level of heat resistance. Before packing, it is better to wring it out to remove excess moisture. To enhance the flavor experience, you can use fruit juice with ice in the hookah base (vase) or add crushed pieces of fruit.
