How to Make a Hookah Correctly and Deliciously at Home
The tradition of smoking hookah has not lost its popularity since the invention of the smoking device. However, you cannot always fully enjoy the magic of the ceremony with thick aromatic smoke and achieve maximum relaxation in hookah bars, restaurants, or at home. We will tell you how to properly prepare a hookah that will often surpass the taste qualities of a device packed even by a professional.
How to Prepare a Hookah at Home: Basic Rules?
There is no single recipe for preparing a good and delicious hookah: the taste qualities and aroma are not even affected by the cost and size of the smoking device, as they are largely determined by the quality of the tobacco and the experience of the person preparing it. The secret to a harmonious and balanced taste lies in the tobacco blends, the air-tightness of the structure, the optimal amount of water in the vase, and the material of the tobacco bowl.
How to Prepare a Delicious Hookah: Components of the Smoking Device?
The hookah structure includes the following elements:
Vase (base);
Bowl;
Stem;
Hose port (there may be several);
The hose itself;
Mouthpiece;
Heat Management Device (HMD/Kaloud) or a coal tray;
Grommets/Seals.
Additional accessories that will ensure greater convenience and enjoyment from using the smoking device are tongs and an awl for punching holes in the foil, if you do not have an HMD.
Before packing the hookah, you should thoroughly wash all parts and check their integrity. Old and unmaintained devices are often characterized by an unpleasant odor and oxidized elements: all this directly affects the taste and aroma, and an unaesthetic appearance will clearly diminish all the pleasure of the smoking ceremony.
To get a good draw, you must hermetically connect all parts of the smoking device. Then, water or other liquids are poured into the vase according to your taste preferences (milk, juice, tea, or even alcoholic beverages), and the stem is installed. The necessary amount of water is determined immediately after attaching the stem – the part should be immersed in the liquid by approximately -.
The optimal amount of liquid in the vase is very important, because if there is more water than needed, the draw will be difficult. The reverse situation is with a lack of liquid – the smoke will be poorly filtered in the stem, will remain under-cooled, and will contain a larger amount of harmful compounds.
How to Pack a Hookah Well: The Tobacco Bowl?
The classic way to prepare a delicious hookah at home is to use a clay bowl. The part heats up in the shortest time, but absorbs the aroma of the tobacco, so it requires regular cleaning and mixture replacement. The bowl must be clean: remove any carbon deposits, if any, and the residue of the previous shisha. The presence of a charred layer negatively affects the taste qualities of the hookah: you will only feel bitterness, not the taste and aroma of the tobacco.
In some cases, homemade bowls from fruits are used – in order for such a hookah to turn out as tasty and aromatic as possible, a large amount of coal is needed. Most often, apples, citrus fruits, pineapple, and even coconut are used.
How to Prepare Hookah Tobacco?
Before lighting the hookah, you should clean the tobacco mixture from various impurities (stems and foreign solid elements), and also chop overly large leaves. If the tobacco is too wet, it needs to be dried from excess moisture with a dry napkin. In the opposite situation, when the top layer of the tobacco mixture has already dried, you need to thoroughly mix and moisten it.
The taste qualities, the aroma of the smoke, and, consequently, the pleasure received from the smoking ceremony directly depend on what you fill the hookah with. It is also important to know how much tobacco to put in the hookah. Masters recommend leaving approximately of free space at the top of the bowl. At the same time, the tobacco mixture must be evenly distributed without tamping – if the tobacco is packed too tightly, the air circulation will be disrupted.
You can freely experiment with tobacco and create various taste combinations. However, be careful, as some "invented" mixtures can have a truly intoxicating effect. You can find videos on how to pack a hookah on the "Aroma Dym" channel on YouTube.
How to Properly Light the Hookah?
The lighting process also largely determines the taste qualities of the hookah. There are several options for coal:
Chemical: Tablets based on saltpeter. The material heats up quite quickly, but greatly spoils the taste and aroma of the smoke, so it is used for hookah preparation quite rarely.
Natural: Based on wood or coconut shell. Such coal takes a long time to light, but can maintain the optimal temperature for smoking for a long time.
Electric: An innovation in the field of hookah art. This lighting option can be called the simplest and most efficient for preparing a hookah at home, as heating only requires connecting the device to the mains.
Many people still prefer the traditional lighting method with natural coal heated on an open fire (at home – on a gas burner or using a torch). It is optimal to heat the pieces until red edges appear around the sides, for approximately - minutes. The amount of coal needed is determined by the type of bowl: - pieces are needed for a classic clay bowl, and - for a fruit bowl.
It is also important to note the need for preliminary cleaning of the HMD from soot, as the presence of carbon on the element significantly spoils the taste of the smoke. The tobacco should not touch the heat management device, as the mixture will overheat much faster and require replacement. Only - puffs are needed to get the hookah started: the presence of thick, light smoke indicates the full readiness of the setup for the fabulous oriental ceremony of relaxation and enjoyment.
