Preparing a Hookah with an Orange – What We Need

In addition to the hookah itself, we will need:

  • Ripe, large oranges;

  • A special spoon and knife for removing the pulp;

  • Hookah foil or a Kaloud (Heat Management Device);

  • Liquid for the base (vase) – wine, water, juice, milk, or another composition as desired;

  • Coconut charcoal and a stove for lighting it;

  • Tobacco mix with your favorite flavor;

  • Several wooden or bamboo toothpicks.

What Kind of Orange Should It Be? (Tips)

The correct choice of orange is a guarantee of the hookah's aroma and exotic taste. The fruit should be medium or large and ripe, but definitely not overripe, as the orange must withstand high temperatures, and an overripe fruit will simply fall apart. The ideal orange has a firm peel and a solid core.

Furthermore, we need an orange with a minimal amount of seeds, otherwise, the smoke will have a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is best to choose the Cadanera variety – it is completely seedless. If the store does not specify the variety name, it is best to take several fruits and choose the one with the fewest seeds.

Orange Bowl for Hookah – Step-by-Step Instructions

To prepare an exotic hookah with an orange, you will need to:

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry the fruit with a paper towel. Then, you need to cut off the top with a sharp knife so that the pulp is clearly visible – this should be done in one motion, ensuring smooth cut edges.

  2. The soft pulp of the fruit should be removed with a spoon, leaving a small layer at the bottom. You don't need to try too hard – it is enough to blot the remaining pulp on the walls with a napkin to remove moisture.

  3. On the bottom of the orange, make a neat hole for the stem (shaft) with a knife – it should fit into it as tightly as possible. For this, we recommend making a small hole first and then carefully widening it if necessary.

  4. On the bottom of the bowl, make a frequent grate with toothpicks – it should hold the tobacco mix.

If you have done everything correctly, your bowl is ready. The tobacco mix can have any flavor you enjoy. The tobacco needs to be blotted lightly with a napkin to remove moisture, then packed evenly into the bowl so that it fills the entire internal space of the orange, but does not touch the edge by a few millimeters – otherwise, the tobacco will burn. On top of the orange edge, foil is placed in three or four layers with an overhang and carefully wrapped. The foil can be additionally secured around the cut edge with toothpicks. In the layer of foil, you need to make several holes with the same toothpick at a distance of approximately three or four millimeters from each other.

After the coals are heated, they are placed on top of the layer of foil with holes. Usually, three or four pieces are enough – the coals should be distributed evenly over the foil, but without touching each other. The heat can be regulated by adding or removing coals. With a Kaloud, the process of lighting the hookah on an orange is about the same, but it takes a little less time. The Kaloud heats up longer and gives slightly different flavor sensations during smoking. Additionally, Kalouds are designed for traditional silicone or ceramic bowls – on an orange, you will have to change the coals more often.

Common Mistakes (Tips)

Making a hookah with an orange bowl is not so difficult – you just need a little practice. The most common mistake occurs at the stage of choosing the fruit. The orange must be medium or large – a small fruit will quickly overheat and fall apart. It is best if it has an elongated shape and minimal juice. Toothpicks can be replaced with ordinary matches, but the sulfur head must be cut off beforehand. Another problem can be large tobacco particles in the mix – they should be crushed with a knife. Fruity and berry tobacco pairs best with orange, as well as additions of mint, vanilla, and cinnamon.

During the process of smoking a hookah with an orange, you must constantly monitor the coal embers. Unlike ceramic and silicone, organic rind absorbs a large amount of thermal energy, so you will need a little more coal and tobacco. Overall, such a hookah is a true exotic delight for all lovers of quality smoke. It can become the highlight of an evening with friends and will give unforgettable flavor sensations from any tobacco mix. With a little practice, you can prepare such a hookah in just a couple of minutes without much hassle.
